Will Beneficiaries: Tradesperson / Nurses / Widows / Brides
The above quoted phrase commences the famous Will of Oliver Smith, Esquire,
and in keeping with the will, all beneficiaries must be of good moral character,
moderate financial circumstances and domiciled in one of the following communities:
The following categories briefly summarize the stipulations and subsequent benefits under the will. Additionally, all the annual net income from the Smith’s Agricultural School Fund is provided to the City of Northampton for the use of the school.
TRADESPERSONS • The gift is $1,200.
Rules: Apply before 19th birthday and serve an apprenticeship in an eligible trade until age 21. The apprenticeship may be served while studying or working in your trade. You must also complete and keep updated any required forms. The benefit is paid at age 22.
NURSES • The gift is $1,200.
Rules: Apply before 21st birthday. Application must be received after acceptance into a nursing program or while enrolled as a nursing student. Must graduate with a degree which would enable you to become a registered or licensed practical nurse.
WIDOWS • The gift is for widows who have at least one child under the age of 18. The amount is $600 for one child plus $200 for each additional child under 18. The benefit is paid annually and ceases when the youngest child becomes 18, or if the widow moves from an eligible community or remarries.
BRIDES • The $200 gift is given to brides who marry for the first time, are at least 18 years of age and meet the residency requirements. The application must be received by Smith Charities within 90 days of the marriage. A copy of the original Marriage Certificate is required with each application if the bride’s marriage has already taken place. The Certificate of Marriage form below is only necessary for future brides.
